When it comes to the perfect wedding cake, tradition isn’t for everyone.
And while white tiered cakes with buttercream roses are probably the go-to option for many, a handful of couples opt for something stranger than elegant.
Halloween-themed cakes – especially for couples who are getting married in October – are a popular choice for many.
From using classic Halloween movie characters as inspiration to creating terribly realistic crime scenes, there are plenty of ideas.
Online, pastry chefs around the world are sharing their gruesome creations – and they don’t disappoint.
Here’s a look at some of the most striking Halloween-themed tiered cakes circulating on social media.
The macabre two-tiered creation shows off a traditional white wedding cake with white rose details and a draped fondant – but with a terrifying twist.
In true Halloween style, a carving knife is dipped into the upper level, and the lower level features a sinister smiley mouth with sharp, bloodstained teeth and two bloodstained fingers trying to get out.
The entire cake lies in a pool of blood with two lifelike, life-size dismembered hands placed directly in front.
For something a little less terrifying, sugar artist Andrea Vacek from Bluebird candy created a personalized Nightmare Before Christmas themed wedding cake.
The large three tier wedding cake has three tiers decorated in the colors white, black and red.
The base tier features black and white stripes that direct the eye upward to the chocolate artwork of the Jack Skellington and Sally movie characters, up to the upper tier, which is solid white with black stitching details.
Around the character is the quote “It’s clear as anyone can see, we’re just meant to be” and red roses are used to add a vibrant pop of color.
Describing the flavor of the cake, Andrea writes: “Layers of vanilla and chocolate cake, frosted in both chocolate and Swiss vanilla meringue buttercream.
“The black and white fondant details carry the theme around Sally and Jack Skellington sculpted in chocolate.”
The sugar artist has also worked on other Halloween-themed wedding cakes for her clients.
Writing about her last-minute skeleton wedding cake, Andrea posts: “This upscale glam cake features marbled fondant, live flowers and a poured sugar cake.
“Flavor? Red velvet of course!”
The blood spatter-like topper was made from melted sugar.
Trudy Mitchell, wedding cake designer and owner of JellyCakeUK, created a fall-inspired cake with a big surprise for one of her customers.
Trudy writes: “Today’s very fall wedding cake.
“Oak slice style lower level with two bare levels on top.
“All decorated with sugar pumpkins, leaves and acorns.”
From the front, the woody-style cake looks worthy of a fairy tale.
But from the back … a zombie apocalypse scene.
Climbing to the back of the stands, gnawing at the cake, seven zombies.
Some with limbs missing and created with bleeding wounds.
One of them even seems to have intestines hanging down from its side.
Lowton Cake Maker The cake bank created an adorable ghost themed wedding cake in 2019.
The cake featured ghostly bride and groom toppers sitting on three white frosted tiers.
Black brushstroke details have also been applied to add a touch of darkness.
The designer revealed that 60 cookies and levels of chocolate, vanilla and coffee were used throughout the creation.
Maria Lenchuk, the pastry chef behind Some serious sweets, took the classic wedding cake style and shape and tore it up to reveal the raw, meaty interior.
The intestines, including the severed intestines, overflow from the cake, leaving behind a trail of blood and splatter.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Maria said: “Tripe is made of fondant.
“Blood is corn syrup, corn starch, and red food coloring.”
In the caption below the photo, the cake maker posted: “The last Halloween parties are tonight, including Halloween weddings.
“How’s that for a wedding cake? We had a lot of fun doing it. “
One Instagram user commented: “Geeeeeezzzz, that sounds like real loathing.”
Cake maker Fiona McKnight created an intricate Halloween themed wedding cake with a spooky angels and demons design.
In the caption, below the photo, Fiona posted: “Angels and demons design with bas-relief and aged stone technique.
“There is an undercoat of black and silver to further develop the dark versus light theme.
“My design process tends to be organic, so I was very happy with the end result of this design.”
Blue Lace Cakes designed a unique tiered white wedding cake with a realistic brain positioned on the top tier with blood dripping down the sides.
In a post to cake company subscribers, the creator wrote, “This is a throwback to, I think, one of my favorite wedding cakes.
“Yeah, someone had that for a wedding cake.
“This is a perfect example of taking your wedding cake and making it your own.
“While traditional wedding cakes will always have their place, I bet you all the guests remembered this wedding cake.
“That doesn’t mean you have to put a brain on your cake, but being a little more daring and creative with your wedding cake is a perfect way to show off your personality as a couple and make a memorable impression.
“Well done to all the daring bride and groom! “
